The Asiatic Lion – also known as the Indian Lion or Persian Lion – is a large carnivorous mammal that once ranged across the coastal forests of northern Africa and from northern Greece across south-west Asia to eastern India. Today they are limited to one small area in the Gir Forest in India. They are slightly smaller than their African counterparts. Their main prey are wild boars, buffaloes, antelopes, and deer. While they are considered endangered, their population is stable and they are a protected species. There are currently less than 500 Asiatic lions living in the wild.
