Information about the Javan Rhinoceros: The Javan or Sunda Rhinoceros is one of only 5 extant species of rhinoceros. Of these this animal is thought to be the most rare. Once the most widespread of the Asian rhinos, hunting, wars and habitat loss have reduced their numbers to a handful, and only by extensive conservation efforts has the species been saved – at least temporarily – from extinction. There are no known species living in any of the world’s zoos. These large land animals traditionally inhabited lowland rainforest, wet grasslands and flood plains.
